  1. I have been teaching for ten years at the Secondary level and it has been my experience that girls outperform boys. This phenomenon is not new. In an article entitled ‘Why boys aren't learning’ in a 2004 issue of Teach, freelancer Susan Murray says that educators don't understand "typical boys traits." Some of these traits include aggression, verbal and emotional reticence, and an interest in objects moving through the air, she says. Boys and girls are quite different with respect to their development, sensory perception and stress tolerance. These are some factors that contribute to their academic performance. Most of the other contributing factors are known and a list of reasons can be stated as to why boys under perform. The question though is what are we going to do about it?
This brings to mind the recent drive by the Government to establish same sex schools. While this has stimulated a lot of debate and the advantages and disadvantages were explored the main focus should not be side lined. The issue at hand is ‘would this system or strategy help with male under performance?
