Girls are better at multitasking than boys.
Critics of modern technology are of the belief that teens prefer to stay at home with their computers and video games. However, there are those who believe that technology facilitates greater connectivity among children between the ages 12 - 17 years. Young people use a variety of technologies and media at the same time to achieve a number of different goals.
The most popular form of multitasking is being online and watching television at the same time.
A Media Head Survey revealed that 35%of girls watched television while on the Internet, compared to 32%of the boys. Girls multitask in other ways. They use mobile phones, instant messaging and video phones with greater frequency than boys.
What do you think?
I agree that girls multi-task better than boys. Some believe that it is coded into the female DNA, so females are natural at multi-tasking. Some believe that it is the way the different genders are nurtured. (cook, wash, clean and babysit simultaneously). I know, who says, stereotypical and gender-biased?
ReplyDeleteHowever in my experiences, I believe that girls are more inclined to share and talk and so they are better at language. Boys however are more inclined to be analytical and logical and they are better at problem solving especially in Mathematics. The weakest reader in my class (a boy) scored the highest in Mathematics on his End of Term test.
So girls can talk on cell phone while chatting online and doing an assignment while boys perform one task at a time. Thus as teachers we have to set appropriate tasks and challenges for our students so that the girls aren’t easily bored and boys aren’t overwhelmed. We can to design collaborative projects for our students so that they are guided to capitalize on each other strengths, develop an appreciation for each other’s differences and build their self esteem.
These projects should include some Web 2.0 technology as by its nature it provides a collaborative framework, especially blogs. Projects such as these motivate students to engage in learning.
I do agree with Jewel that girls seem to be able multitask more than boys. However, the boys are catching up because in school I have observed boys texting and listening to music or playing video games. Even in the classrooms boys are becoming as sneaky as the girls by pretending to pay attention and at the same time, the phone is under the desk and thay are texting. Although, the boys may not be as good at multitasking as the girls because most of the students say they listen to music and study simultaneously but the girls'results are normally better. Is this because girls mature faster than boys?
